The REF16-S device expands the "electronic overcurrent protection" product group for DC 24 V applications.
It selectively protects all DC 24 V load circuits with a width of just 12.5 mm. This is achieved by a combination of active electronic current limitation in the event of a short circuit and an overload cut-out at typ. 1.25 x IN. In combination with the E-T-A plug-in bases 80plus and 81plus, the REF16-S
can be installed quickly, conveniently and flexibly. The bases enable power distribution and signal distribution via pluggable bridges.
The REF16-S is also latched to the base and can be assigned to fixed current levels or slots using a coding pin. The installation dimensions comply with the DIN 43880 standard for installation devices.
DC 24 V switched-mode power supply units are frequently used in automation technology. However, in the event of an overload, they reduce the output voltage that is intended to supply all connected loads. If a fault occurs in a single load in the system, the voltage in all other load circuits also drops. This often results not only in an undefined fault condition, but also in the machine or system coming to a standstill.
This is precisely where the REF16-S comes into play by reacting to the overload condition faster than the switching power supply. The maximum possible overcurrent is always limited to typically 1.25 times the selected rated current (see Table 1). This means that capacitive loads up to 20,000 μF can be switched on, but are switched off in the event of an overload or short circuit. To adapt to the load conditions, the rated current is available in fixed values of 0.5 A...10 A. Operating and error states are indicated by a multi-coloured LED, a potential-free signal contact or by an integrated short-circuit-proof status output. Remote operation is possible via a remote reset signal or a remote ON/OFF control signal. The manual ON/OFF switch directly on the device allows targeted commissioning of individual load circuits.
As soon as the REF16-S detects an overload or short circuit in its load circuit, it blocks the load output transistor and thus interrupts the current flow in the faulty circuit. Once the fault has been rectified, the load output of the REF16-S is reactivated by an electronic reset signal or manually by pressing the ON/OFF switch directly on the device.
