The device ESS22-T extends the product group "Electronic circuit breakers" for DC 24 V applications. It is a two-pole version with galvanic isolation. The ESS22-T thus complies with the requirements of the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC and the associated standard EN 60204-1 "Safety of machinery, electrical equipment of machines", par. 9.4.3.1

The combination of active electronic current limitation in the event of a short circuit and an overload cut-off from 1.1 x IN selectively and bipolarly protects the DC 24 V load circuits. The ESS22-T can be snapped directly onto the top-hat rail and thus offers fast and flexible mounting for groups of devices with several DC 24 V circuits fed by switched-mode power supplies or transformer power supplies.

DC 24 V switched-mode power supplies are used very frequently in automation technology. However, in the event of an overload, they regulate the output voltage that is to supply all connected loads. So if a fault occurs in a single load in the system, the voltage also collapses in all other load circuits. Often, this results not only in an undefined fault condition, but even in a standstill of the machine or system.

This is exactly where the ESS22-T intervenes by reacting faster than the switched-mode power supply to the overload condition. The maximum possible overcurrent is always limited to typically 1.4 times the selected rated current. This allows capacitive loads up to 20,000 μF to be switched on, but they are only switched off in the event of an overload or short circuit. For adaptation to the load conditions, the nominal current is available in fixed values of 0.5 A...10 A. Operating and error states are indicated by a visual display and via signal contacts. Remote operation is optionally possible via an electrically isolated control input.

The manual ON/OFF switch directly on the unit allows targeted commissioning of individual load circuits. As soon as the ESS22-T detects an overload or short circuit in its load circuit, it blocks the load output transistor and thus interrupts the current flow in the faulty circuit; in addition, the load output is galvanically isolated by a mechanical switching element with two poles. After the fault has been rectified, the load output of the ESS22-T is reactivated manually by actuating the ON/OFF switch directly on the unit or optionally by the galvanically isolated reset input or by the control input.
